Failure is not a binary state.

Joshua Rothman’s How do you know when a system has failed?” for The New Yorker[Apple News Link] is an interesting read.

My title is my favorite quote from the article, but the whole thing is full of them.

When working with a system, it’s important not to assume that the scale of the problem implies the scale of the solution.

That one is something to keep in mind when thinking about all the things” going on.

Only novices believe that a system will work flawlessly.

I feel personally called out here. (But really, at least at work, I’ve embraced process over goals.)
